MADELINE FERGUSON - A LONG WALK WITH NO RETURN
this 5 piece band from troy, NY, featuring members of at war with shadows, play a brand of hardcore in the vein of pg.99, orchid, saetia, you & i, and other bands like that. raw, aggressive hardcore that is often called screamo.
the record contains 9 songs, 6 newer songs and 3 demo tracks. the songs range from melodic to raw and heavy without any notice. the songs have a lot of emotion in them. they're not just mindlessly aggressive songs. the singing parts remind me of early at the drive-in. the guy's voice reminds me like cedric's voice. at some points i thought cedric was singing on the record.
all in all, a great record. fans of saetia, orchid, pg.99, and you & i will definitely love this record.

MADELINE FERGUSON - A LONG WALK WITH NO RETURN
I got some copies of this for distro. I sent some $ to the guy who put it out (Justin), but he never received my money. Yet he sent me the records anyway! Random acts of kindness = keeps hardcore tickin'.
Anyways, I haven't listened to this one a whole bundle but giving it another check over now I probably should have because this is pretty decent screamy emo / hardcore. Of course, there is 903 other screamy emo / hardcore bands out there currently (a conservative estimate) so it is nothing particularly out of the ordinary, but it does sound good to these (rather blocked up) ears. It has the requisite melodic parts, the big build ups, bits where they sing and scream at the same time, yep, many traditional elements for this style of music, but they bring plenty of energy and hit with impact. For those who need comparisons, it's the usual suspects - Saetia, Funeral Diner, Four Hundred Years. That kind of late 90's type thing. "It's Not Me, It's You" does the mix up of singing and screaming to best effect, everything tangles together and I bet the band flails around a lot whilst playing live. Occasionally they get a bit too metal for my tastes (like the chugger riffs on "Lessons in Accident Prevention", but for the most part I can recommend this to anyone who likes the screamy end of the emo spectrum.

MADELINE FERGUSON - A LONG WALK WITH NO RETURN
This CD is so good it's scary. Put one of these songs on a mixtape and I'll go out of my way to find the full record. Mhm, it's emo as in emotional, screamo as in screaming vocals, hard as in hardcore - and still it doesn't fall into any (sub-)genre. I really don't know how to describe this. Superintense passionate music with vocals that go all the way from singing to screaming. At times I feel reminded of the first Four Hundred Years LP or of the Khayembii Communiqué, and that's a compliment. The lyrics are excellent and range from critical thoughts about September 11th to topics like "Deprogramming Ray Cappo" which fucking RULES. I have only good things to say about this and if you come record shopping at Yummy and I like your musical taste, I am going to recommend this. (tr)

MADELINE FERGUSON - A LONG WALK WITH NO RETURN
This is good. Several bands have used a similar framework for hardcore, but the one that comes to mind is You and I, which I really liked. Very tense and intense, but not like a wall of sound. Rather you can hear individual notes, and the tension is periodically broken by distinctly less loud parts. Within this format there are two vocalists, one more screamy and one more talky. The lyrics struck me as mostly personal. This is a well done, popular style of hardcore, and I think many would like this. DF

MADELINE FERGUSON - A LONG WALK WITH NO RETURN
Although the demo cd was pretty rocking, this took me by surprise. I don't know if I was just not thinking right or what but I was expecting something more layed back. But this isn't even crazy or anything, its just really powerful. This disk has 7 new songs from the band along with 3 demo tracks, so I'll just talk about the new ones because I've reviewed the demo already...
Yes, this is really powerful. The band has that early sound... oh no, don't say it... yeah, I'm going to say it... mid 90's sound. But they definately twisted it up with some new stuff. And its not even just that sound. I hear all kinds of stuff in it. Nothing comes across as thrown in or odd though. It's more along the lines of stuff on Ebullition than Level Plane though. What that means, I'll leave for you to decide =)
The CD is hard hitting but really nice and pretty at the same time. The songs are really well structured and nothing sounds flat. The vocals go along with the music and they arent just randomly shouted and all that jazz. They are shouts and screams but with some direction.
I really can't think of many people who wouldn't be into this. Its a really solid CD that you should give a listen to. You may be very surprised. You may. You.
